WHAT I LEARNED

CRITICAL THINKING

I used critical thinking and problem solving multiple times throughout the semester. For example, purchasing books from a retailer each time can be expensive. We found that First Book is a valuable inexpensive resource. Additionally, creating our own resources can be cheaper, such as creating our own sibling workbook.

COMMUNICATION

I communicated verbally and through written communication. For example, I connected with Beth Oppenheimer, the director of Idaho Association for the Education of Young Children at Early Leg Up Day. Additionally, I communicated with Barnes & Noble and thanked them for partnering with us for the book drive.

TEAMWORK

I worked as part of a team throughout the semester. I worked with Meghan Sainsbury on the auction and in preparation for the Early Leg Up Day. I also worked with other interns and members of St. Luke's during the book donation event at Barnes and Noble. Additionally, I worked with the injury prevention team to help represent them at the FitOne packet pickup event.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

I used technology for every project, large or small. I learned how to create an e-invite, a bookmark, a pamphlet, word searches, workbooks, as well as order books and research programs. Technology is vital in getting information out, and is a very valuable resource.

LEADERSHIP

I experienced leadership during the Early Leg Up Day event. Meghan Sainsbury gave me ideas from previous events, but ultimately it was up to me to delegate creating the poster and truffala trees, as well as setting up and manning our booth at the event and making sure our presence at the event was beneficial and successful. I feel confident that it was. I also ran the Barnes & Noble book drive and brought everything to set up, created a word search to hand out, and took everything down, as well as brought the Barnes & Noble team popcorn as a thank you.

I remained professional by always doing my work during internship hours and and also treating everyone with respect and honesty. I did what I said I would do by the time I said I would do it. I also maintained an appropriate wardrobe for my internship hours in the office.

PROFESSIONALISM

CAREER MANAGMENT

I successfully completed all the projects that were given to me, and I have a newfound appreciation for health education and promotion. There are a lot of moving parts that require many skills. I was particularly good at the digital technology aspect. I also enjoyed the creation of posters, games, and activities for other events. The best part was getting to talk to other professionals and the public about the importance of reading.

CAREER MANAGEMENT

INTERCULTURAL FLUENCY

I kept other cultures in mind throughout this internship. We obtained books in Spanish as well as English, and when picking out books I avoided any with religious themes, or other culturally biased themes. Remaining culturally fluent is important to me, and I worked hard to reflect that in my internship work.
